Youth Activism in an Era of Education Inequality

Winner, 2016 Best Authored Book presented by the Society for Research on Adolescence This is what democracy looks like: Youth organizers in Colorado negotiate new school discipline policies to end the school to jail track. Latino and African American students march to district headquarters to protest high school closure. Young immigration rights activists persuade state legislators to pass a bill to make in-state tuition available to undocumented state residents. Students in an ESL class collect survey data revealing the prevalence of racism and xenophobia. These examples, based on ten years of research by youth development scholar Ben Kirshner, show young people building political power during an era of racial inequality, diminished educational opportunity, and an atrophied public square. The book's case studies analyze what these experiences mean for young people and why they are good for democracy. What is youth activism and how does it contribute to youth development? How might collective movements of young people expand educational opportunity and participatory democracy? The interdependent relationship between youths' political engagement, their personal development, and democratic renewal is the central focus of this book. Kirshner argues that youth and societal institutions are strengthened when young people, particularly those most disadvantaged by educational inequity, turn their critical gaze to education systems and participate in efforts to improve them.

Ghostrider in the Sky

Ghostrider in the Sky is a tense, steamy and accurate portrayal of the Vietnam era. It begins with Anna's discovery that she was conceived out of wedlock by a man her mother knew briefly. The central character, Norris Blakeman, is unaware that he sired a child while he spent the summer in Paris. This novel follows the lives of three college roommates as it delves into the psychological effects of those who fought the war and those who chose to abstain or protest. It ends with Anna's decision whether or not to inform her biological father of her existence. This book also offers the reader insight into other noted military operations, such as support for the Contras in Central America and the failed rescue attempt to recover our hostages in Iran. Virtually all military actions described in this book are real events that were personally witnessed. Gordon L. Bocher served 11 1/2 years in the Air Force. He flew 127 combat rides as a Fire Control Officer (FCO) aboard the AC-130A Gunship. As a recue navigator, Bocher participated in the abortive attempt to rescue the 55 hostages held in Iran. Throughout his service, Bocher was awarded two Distinguished Flying Cross medals, eight Air Medals, The Purple Heart, The Conspicuous Service Award from Gov. Mario Cuomo (NY) and two nominations for The Silver Star. The author's personal story was chronicled in two frontpage stories in Newsday, People Magazine, The Colorado Star, The Veterans of Foreign Wars Magazine and was featured in 'The Book of Man' (pp. 417-424) by William Bennett (9/29/11). This story provides an accurate history of the end stages of the Viet Nam War to the Oral History Section of the Library of Congress. Mr. Bocher also worked as an Air Traffic Control Specialist for 27 years.
